Jennifer Billingsley (they/them)
Jennifer Billingsley is a non-binary librarian, community connector, and tireless advocate for the LGBTQIA2S+ community whose career is defined by a deep passion for collaboration and a commitment to ensuring that all voices, especially those that have been historically silenced, have a visible place in public life.
While Jennifer has had a tremendous impact here in Middletown, their work has also been felt across the entire state. In 2018 they organized the first Drag Artist Story Time in Connecticut, creating a legacy of inclusive, educational, and family-friendly programming that has inspired similar initiatives statewide. As a leading organizer for Middletown Pride from 2018 to 2022, they were instrumental in creating new events and initiatives for the city. From 2022 to 2025 Jennifer continued their service to the community as a leader on Middletown’s LGBTQIA2S+ Commission, continuously advocating for solutions that increased accessibility for all members of our community—such as requiring that Middletown Pride hire ASL interpreters for all events.
What Pride represents to me:
“Pride is about visibility, community, and courage. It gives LGBTQIA2S+ people the chance to gather openly, be seen as our authentic selves, and remind those who feel alone that they belong. When queer history is ignored or censored, Pride makes sure that there are spaces where our elders can share their stories. Spaces where we can learn from one another.
Pride is glitter and rainbows. Pride is a celebration in a time when we desperately need joy. Pride is a protest borne out of a need to defend our right to exist.
Pride changes and saves lives. It shows LGBTQIA2S+ people of every age and background that they are seen, valued, and loved. That together, we can protect our communities and our future. ”

John Pepe (he/him)
John Pepe is the proud owner of The Chez Est, central Connecticut’s premiere LGBTQ+ Bar, Restaurant and Cabaret performance venue. The Chez is a well known staple of nightlife entertainment, a safe haven and second home for our community. It is celebrating its 50th year of operation in October. The Chez has played a pivotal roll in the Connecticut drag scene, showcasing countless drag performers from all over the country. John works hard to carry on the legacy of the Chez and feels inspired by the wonderful community of patrons who support the establishment. John started working at the Chez in 2003 as the door person one night a week. He also was a DJ at the Chez for many years before becoming a bar tender, then he became the owner of the Chez in 2017. John also enjoys spending time and making memories with his loving friends, chosen family and 3 wonderful kids. Happy Pride!
What Pride represents to me:
"Pride to me is a celebration of community, resilience, and the progress we've made, while acknowledging the struggles of the past. Pride is about embracing our true selves and honoring the journey that brought us here. As we look to the future, we're reminded that pride is a movement – a fight for equality, acceptance, and love. It's about standing together, supporting one another, and celebrating our diversity. "
